In the wild American West of 1853, two people find themselves together on a thrilling adventure, dodging bandits, rebels, and other dangerous foes.

Rafe Winters still feels the sting of his status as the illegitimate son of a cattle baron. He is being blackmailed into spying on Mexico for the US government and soon discovers something that could plunge the two countries into another war. Before he can reveal his information, he is shot and left for dead in the California wilderness.

When Rafe wakes up, he is in the arms of Ariel St. Clair, a woman with secrets of her own. She has fled from her home in San Francisco to escape her stepbrother's sexual obsession and her stepmother's evil schemes. When she saw Rafe half-dead on the trail, she couldn't simply pass by.

Rafe and Ariel agree to stick together until they reach Jackson, a mining camp in the California Mother Lode.
