This is the story of Aran, a sheep rancher, descended from Irish immigrants who came to America after the Great Famine and worked their way west from the tenements of New York. As a youngster on the family homestead in Montana, Aran began to master all the skills of sheep ranching as if he was born to it. His life was interrupted by being drafted into the Vietnam War. Badly wounded in body and spirit, he was driven to a homeless life on the hobo trail hopping freights from coast to coast. This changed when he encountered a social worker in New York who sensed that he had a connection to her. Their bond touches on themes that are all too evident in our present world as does the mystery of the cave that he discovered on the family ranch.
