ReviewBe forewarned. This is not a bedtime book. It’s a book about evil. And evil speaks for itself. Harmett, master of the macabre, is its medium. The perpetrators are gentlemen, fathers, terrorists, sadistic lovers. They carry Chiclets; lift their undershirts pour hot candle wax along the spine, or yank a tangle of sienna curls. They speak without remorse. The victims are—innocent. There’s no way to prepare. Often it’s being somewhere at an appointed time, no hint of what’s to come. And yet, these poems are elegant, shapely things, lush and sensuous, with an insistent beat. Harnett, master of the macabre, is in the background, digging into our soul’s dark crevices.Barbara Goldberg, author of Kingdom of SpeculationCatherine Harnett is a brave, unsentimental poet, fearless in tackling the toughest subjects: terrorism, Sandy Hook, the vulnerability of children in the face of senseless violence. Her poems are dark, yet dellicate, suffused with mingled grief and tenderness for the vanishing world: “so much fruit. So much juice.”Jean NordhausAbout the AuthorCatherine Harnett is an author of poetry and fiction from Northern Virginia.
