Bahrain, authored by the Federal Research Division, is a comprehensive guide to the history, culture, and politics of the small island nation of Bahrain. The book provides a detailed overview of the country's geography, demographics, and economy, as well as its political system and foreign relations. It also delves into the country's rich cultural heritage, including its art, literature, and music. The book begins with an introduction to Bahrain's history, from its ancient roots as a trading hub to its modern-day status as a global financial center. It then explores the country's geography, including its unique position as an archipelago in the Persian Gulf, and its diverse landscape, which ranges from sandy beaches to rocky deserts. The next section of the book focuses on Bahrain's people, including its multi-ethnic population and its rich cultural traditions. It also examines the country's economy, which is heavily reliant on oil and gas exports, and its efforts to diversify through investments in industries like tourism and finance. The book then turns to Bahrain's political system, which is a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislature. It explores the country's complex relationship with its powerful neighbor, Saudi Arabia, as well as its role in regional and international affairs. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of Bahrain's future prospects, including its potential for continued economic growth and its challenges in the areas of human rights and political reform.Overall, Bahrain provides a comprehensive and insightful look at this important Middle Eastern nation, making it an essential resource for anyone interested in the region's politics, culture, and history.Bahrain's relationship with Qatar is long-standing. After the Al Khalifa conquered Bahrain in 1783 from their base in Qatar, Bahrain became the Al Khalifa seat. Subsequently, tribal elements remaining in Qatar sought to assert their autonomy from the Al Khalifa. Thus, in the early nineteenth century, Qatar was the scene of several conflicts involving the Al Khalifa and their rivals, the Al Thani, as well as various outsiders, including Iranians, Omanis, Wahhabis, and Ottomans. When the British East India Company in 1820 signed the General Treaty of Peace with the shaykhs of the area designed to end piracy, the treaty considered Qatar a dependency of Bahrain. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
