Before Number One includes multi-page, non-artwork musical Ralph composed after "No. 1" that were not fully reproduced in From Notation To Music or in his second book, Music Album. These compositions demonstrate Ralph's use of indeterminate, graphic, and text notations and are presented in the back section of the book. Before Number One can be thought of as a large addendum to his first two books.
Before Number One contains descriptive comments plus excerpts from From Notation To Music and Music Album to give some background and context to the musical scores. This second edition includes additional comments and excerpts as well as unrelated anecdotes and poetry to fill the blank spaces that were on the pages of the first edition.
