The journey takes him through the hardest country in the Republic: old Spanish Missions, the edge of distant settlements, and the rugged deserts of northern Mexico. Assigned to a captain hardened by frontier service and paired with another lieutenant with his own ambitions, Rabb quickly learns that hostile Comanches and a vengeful Mexico are not the only threats he will face.
