Jeffrey Sparkes - bachelor with a social conscience - doesn't want to save the world. He merely wants to bring some excitement into the lives of retirees whose minds might otherwise be seizing up from loneliness or boredom; to bring people together... fill gaps in people's lives. And to provide for his own security... to never again be destitute in life. His vehicle is Merville Bridge Club. Sadly for Jeffrey, reconciling MBC's two main characteristics - friendliness and the competitive spirit - can be fraught. It is especially so as tension mounts in the final rounds of the Kelsey Cup competition, 2010-2011. Because discord at the Club is inextricably entwined with domestic strife, particularly in the case of three married couples - Jeffrey's best players as it happens - Weatherbys, Swansons and Rushworths. So complex and passionate are the conflicts involved that Jeffrey - with his Club threatening to implode - is driven to admit to his best friend, Helga, about the gaps in people's lives he is trying to bridge: 'All I seem to be doing is creating them.'
