General Xaphan, after being expelled, aids Lucifer in the reconstruction of his armies in his newly founded underworld kingdom. It is during this time that she befriends a young soldier in the Papal army, a Florentine named Piero Lorenzi. The two become very close and eventually marry. As the war rages on, Xaphan is haunted by fragmented memories and horrible nightmares. The torment seems endless until Lucifer appears and restores her memories. A conflicted Xaphan returns to Hell with Lucifer. With little help from anyone, and almost no chance of success, Piero sets out on a journey to save his wife, not only from Lucifer's forces, but from herself.
