The end is near. Okay, it isn't, but if you watch a lot of news programs at night, then you just might think that we're about to ruin the planet and kill off our species with our stupidity. Come with me and explore ideas and possibilities, and maybe we can keep the world together so that the next generation can either enjoy what we've left behind, or die in mind-numbing delirium. This collection of essays is not just about the ridiculous choices we make, it's about the funny stuff too, and the things I notice about strangers, and how I feel about the odd things I see, and well, my dog. I start with my dog, a place that every author should start:"His breath stinks. He loves to poop right next to our neighbor's car. Of course, I have to clean this up. Anything that even smells remotely good out there, he eats. Anything that stinks, he rolls in it. Sometimes he eats the stinky stuff too, like another dogs' poop. If someone is walking off in the distance, he decides that they are a friend and he needs to go say hi. When I call his name and say words to get him to come inside, he acts like he is deaf. When I keep calling him, he all of a sudden starts sniffing around like he really, really has to pee or poop. Then he lifts his head and stares at me, probably trying to determine if he really has to go inside or if he can just have five more minutes to play. I call again, and he decides that it isn't time to go in. Once I get him inside, he thinks that he deserves a treat for being such a good dog. When I am lying on my bed, he allows me to share his space. He considers it his bed. It's not. When the cat wants to get on the bed and say hi to me, he won't let her. When the cat gets too close, he makes a growling noise in the back of his throat. If a school bus stops out front, he gets all excited thinking that someone is here to visit him. If a UPS truck drives by, he runs to the front door thinking that there is a package for him. When the neighbor walks by, he acts like she's the nicest person on the planet, and not me, the guy who takes care of him every day. When someone comes home, he runs into the other room and acts like he's been ignored all day. When I get dressed to take something out to my truck, he thinks that we're heading out to a park to walk and sniff and explore. Every time." Well, as you can see, I love my dog, and you should too.
