Indian trails marked the area long before the first plank road in the United States-from Syracuse north to Central Square, the main village in Hastings-was completed in July 1846. With more than two hundred photographs, Hastings shows the people who shaped the town, such as Robert Elliott, who once owned much of the village; the eel weirs, pots, and smokehouse; and the landmark buildings at Caughdenoy, such as the Bates-Elliot Block, Courbats Lumber Mill, and the Dixon House hotel.
