Katelijne De Backer has worked at the intersection of business and culture her entire career, for example as the director and/or manager of several art fairs and the art gallery Lehmann Maupin. Her interest in music, art, food, design, books and films has taken her to the most fascinating corners of New York City, and particularly of Brooklyn: when she moved from Manhattan's Upper West Side to Brooklyn in 2002, Katelijne was immediately smitten by her new neighbourhood of Brooklyn Heights. In this guide, she takes you off the beaten path, focussing on Brooklyn's neighbourhoods and their strong sense of local identity. Bedford-Stuyvesant is a historically black middle-class neighbourhood, Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill are old Italian neighbourhoods, and Brooklyn Heights is a celebrity filled historic district. Park Slope is jokingly known as the home of lesbians and baby strollers, Williamsburg and Bushwick are the hoods of hipsters and artists, and so on.
