Horseman is a handy accompaniment to any crime-fiction enthusiast. The book's short chapters and simultaneous progression of different story-lines leaves the reader unable to put the book down, the classic "just one more chapter" is easily experienced with this book. As for the story itself, Horseman delivers a suspenseful and thrilling tale of the west midlands police force and a serial killer hellbent on finding retribution for past injustices. The main character Detective Dominic Carter's journey between case analysis, family life and being one step behind the killer, along with his fellow policemen leaves the reader in constant hunger for unravelling events. The serial killer uses biblical references to revelations and poetical references to orchestrate symbolic murders which unravels in a gruesome and personal vendetta against those who failed him in his past. The story features scenes in Powys, Wales and Birmingham which any reader with experience of either location would be pleased to traverse familiar landscapes on a cat and mouse chase between protagonist and villain. However the book blurs the lines between these two concepts in a way that stimulates and intrigues the reader to the point that concepts of good and evil are played alongside justice and injustice to the point where all four merge and preclude rumination on what the reader would do in that situation and what exactly constitutes an evil act. However, all of the clue hunting and puzzle solving is delivered with a pinch of macabre humour and references to rock n' roll creating a personal yet telling tale of a detective's progression towards trying to defend potential victims and carry out his duty, if he can beat the clock in a race against time to save the victims of the Horseman!
