The youth rebels were young, raw, and full of adrenalin. They walked with bubbling energy as if life were their slave. They had no fear of death, despite all the death and destruction around them. All they nursed was their invincibility. They thought they were freedom-fighters. They defined freedom as it felt suitable now. Their resentment simmered under the surface even during a temporary truce. The fever for freedom was easy to catch, like flu. There was no need for in-depth analysis. The rebel boys resorted to cheap means of stones and bricks for fighting guns and grenades. All readily available weapons littered the streets around town. The Kashmir State Police and the Army that lingered on every street corner regarded them as hoodlums and lawbreakers. The rowdy youth in skirmishes with the police were an every-day event, taken for granted and not even reported anymore.Daily clashes became a part of life, like going to the market, dressing up, and erratic attendance in schools. When the police confronted a hoodlum, a freedom-fighter appeared to battle for an ideal. Anger, rage, and disgust coagulated into frustration, and the modest solutions of resistance like brickbats evolved after every clash. Their ideals were embryonic and nebulous but born out of real tragedies and thronged them into deadly conflicts with the police. They fought to revenge kidnaps, rapes, and murders. They clashed for the 'Azadi, ' the freedom to decide their uncertain fate. However, their poorly defined purpose always cheated them. They had no idea how to fight the easy temptation of violence. The rebels did not think of education, hard work, and responsibility as mature solutions to complex problems of Kashmir. The raw revenge was immediate and satisfying. Any mature solution, achieved with patience and thought, was out of their grasp.
