Marigold is a story about love and drug addiction. Noël North is a mysterious and often reclusive former children's television star and daughter of famed CEO, Fred North. She's spoiled, snarky, narcissistic, and at times endearing. Ben Summers is a depressed, newly separated Science Fiction writer with a taste for getting drunk in the afternoon and passing out in a pile of pizza boxes. Bitter and clueless about his potential divorce, he hides from his problems in his apartment while Noël does the same in her own.

Both have largely kept out of each other's orbit until Noel's roommate locks her out of their apartment one afternoon and later steals Noël's cat. As person after person abandons Noël, Ben believes that if he can be the one constant in her life, then he can save her. Ultimately though, Noël will push even Ben away. It's only through Noël's experience of working through rehab, the friendships she establishes there, and the reconnection with people who are dear to her and Ben's own experience of facing head-on his divorce and mental health issues, that both he and Noël can be finally reunited and explore whether there can ever be anything more than "just friends".
