Twelve year old Jack travels with his widowed mother from England to America to spend the summer holiday in her home town in Appalachia. Jack is amazed at the culture of the mountain village his mother was raised in. Their days consist of hard work, good food, banjo music, and storytelling. But the village has a massive enemy. Two people are dead already. Jack witnesses the taking of his two beautiful little girl cousins by a pair of ugly giants. He joins the rescue party. Jack is soon separated from them and he is lost in the forest, trying to survive the elements. Jack realizes that he alone must save his cousins from the giants. He must face five giants, each one more horrible than the last.
