A Western set in 1909 Muskogee. McGrath is a cavalry officer assigned to a fort in Oklahoma Indian Territory. Recruited by Teddy Roosevelt, he rides up Kettle Hill with the Rough Riders and returns with an undiagnosed case of Shell Shock, now known as PTSD. He resumes his duties at the fort, but comes home one night to find his infant son gone and his dying wife on the kitchen floor. She makes him swear to not kill the men. He tracks down her attackers and turns them over to a tribal court which gives them a light sentence. McGrath resigns his commission and spends ten years as a gambler. A desperate card player accuses him of cheating and McGrath ejects him from the saloon. He returns with two friends and fires on McGrath. McGrath kills the hapless player and another saloon patron helps kill the other two. The man who helped McGrath is the legendary Bass Reeves, one of the first black US Marshalls west of the Mississippi. Reeves turned down an offer from Federal Judge Isaac Parker to work for him after he closed down his Fort Smith and returned o St. Louis. McGrath declares his intention to quick gambling, and Reeves suggests a job with the Muskogee Police Department.McGrath joins the force and works to root out deeply entrenched corruption, including the Deputy Chief of Police.
