I had always been fascinated by my mother’s stories about her brother Lorne, killed in WWII. The one I held most dear involved a young boy and an accidental meeting that resulted in a broken leg an a great friendship. In my young mind, I fantasized that someday I would meet this young man and write my Uncle’s story. In 2004 this wish was granted in the form of a 73-year-old retired policeman, named Peter. Finding him was the first shock of many that would help me realize this childhood obsession. I was destined to stand at Lorne’s grave with Peter at my side. The journey, as told here, would be a long and exciting one in which I would meet a group of people whose hearts had been touched by this never-met Uncle and would help tell this story of young Canadian farm boy on his journey of sacrifice.
