The third book in the Meadows series continues the story of Lily and Thomas Grayson, and the development of the town of Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1918 the US enters WWI. President Wilson, with the help of Creel's propaganda machine, whips Americans into a blood lust against Germany and against each other. Repressive laws suppressing the right to free speech are enacted. Speaking out against the war or the president results in lengthy prison sentences and exorbitant fines. Vigilante groups resort to violence and murder against those they perceive to be a threat. Lily, Thomas and their children are targeted by an old enemy who uses the hostile atmosphere to seek vengeance against them. At a time when they need each other most, the Graysons' marriage is threatened by infidelity. Then deadly Spanish Flu hits Las Vegas putting everyone at risk, especially Thomas who is on the front line, treating people with the disease. The war and the pandemic end, but the Graysons' young daughter is accused of murder. At the end of the 1920's, the worst thing imaginable happens to Lily and Thomas culminating in a major life decision for Lily.
