The Benefactor is a fictional love story about an American who fights on the side of the Republican government against the Nationalist forces led by Franco. It is a sweeping historical romance that intertwines the Spanish Civil War and early WWII period (1937-1941) with a mystery unfolding in 1990. Besides falling in love with the wife of a French Resistance operative, our hero, Robertelli, becomes disillusioned by his initial ethics and war in general. In his pursuits, he encounters a triple agent, and then socks the bribes given to that bad actor (from Spain, the Nazis, and Britain) for himself, his family, and most notably, his grand-daughter. The story goes back in time as his grand-daughter searches the origin of her trust fund - her benefactor.
