On a bright October morning, former FBI Chief of Espionage and Counterintelligence Investigations, Jack Deiter, learns of the tragic death of his wife, Rose by a terrorist bomb aboard a transatlantic flight from Madrid. Links to Iraq indicate that terrorists were targeting another passenger on the flight. Because of his special qualifications, Deiter is asked by the Central Intelligence Agency to embark on a covert mission for the CIA to bring about the assassination of Saddam Hussein, the President of Iraq in retaliation for the bombing. For Deiter, the mission is a personal act of vengeance on the person he is convinced was personally responsible for his loss. While in Baghdad, a conspiracy is uncovered between the terrorist Osama bin Laden and the Iraqi dictator; this leads him first to Moscow and then to war-torn Chechnya in an unusual alliance of the CIA and the Russian FSB to capture bin Laden. A mysterious undercover contact who has previously lured bin Laden to Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, brings about a startling revelation for Deiter.
