Gilmore, a young and promising drug lord, is convicted after five sensational trials and sent to prison for thirty-one years. In prison, he confronts the realities of a vicious, racist subculture. He also discovers an ongoing F.B.I. probe to validate their theory, that the deputy mayor's murder was no more than a takeover by Gilmore, to finance a violent black militancy group.
While incarcerated, Gilmore rediscovers his "True Self". He sacrifices his life fighting for prisoners' rights to change the inhumane treatment they were subjected to by New York State prison officials and the New York State Board of Parole.
In the year 2007, Bennet Goodman, a prominent New York defense attorney, petitioned the Supreme Court of the State of New York for Kenneth Gilmore's release. Today, Gilmore lectures young men and women about the myths, lies and truth behind the life of a gangster. Know more about his remarkable true story with Tried by Fire.
Death of Big Jack
Auburn 1985
The relative calm that typified life at Auburn was sudenly disrupted, as KG and several other prisoners witnessed the horror of a human torch fling itself helplessly about in a locked cell.
Worse than the sight of Big Jack being consumed by bright orange flames was the bone-chilling screams piercing through the normal noise level in the yard. Big Jack's intense shrill became more audible as more prisoners turned to look at the grotesque image and fell silent, watching the final moments of Big Jack's maddening dance of death.
As the crowd of prisoners increased by each second, staring in disbelief at this unimaginable sight, they saw several officers from the prisoner's ERT or Emergency Response Team attempt to extinguish the flames, which stubbornly refused to be smothered by the steady pouring of water.
KG didn't know for sure, nor did anyone else for that matter. However, it was generally believed by many that Big Jack's codefendant had finally gotten his revenge for Big Jack having allegedly provided the police with information leading to the man's arrest and conviction.

Had the apparent disagreement been confined to a simple fistfight between the two principal antagonists Eggie and Dave, the bloody melee that ensued may have been averted. However, when Eggie cut Dave with a knife, all reason was abandoned, and Big Crush, a black guy, went berserk, stabbing any Latino prisoner within his reach.
Unfortunately, Cool Breeze was caught up in the gang fight and was stopped by a round from the officer's AR-15, a modified version of the standard military-issued M16. Cool Breeze collapsed before KG's eyes like a puppet without being held up by its strings.
