It is 1945 and Americans are weary of war and sending soldiers to Europe. One of the soldiers is a Reinhart son. While the family worries about his safety, daily life presents challenges they meet as individuals. Though they are a tight-knit clan and look out for one another, not all is paradise on the farm. There are subterranean angers and resentments, missed opportunities and large regrets--all of which thirteen year-old Lily only vaguely comprehends. At the same time, a marriage unravels, and Aunt Irene and her children move into the Reinhart homestead. Her son Calvin commits an escalating series of violent acts. Lily adjusts begrudgingly to living with her cousins. She both likes and resents them and shares her loft while wishing they would move out. As Lily tries on makeup, ruminates about boys, and worries about where she belongs in the family, she is pushed out of childhood and comes to realize life has more questions than answers.
